Sacha Boey: Will He Leave Bayern Munich This January?

Bayern Munich will allow right-back Sacha Boey to leave during the January transfer window if they receive a suitable offer, according to The Athletic’s Sebastian Stafford-Bloor.

The 25-year-old French defender has fallen out of favour this season and is willing to depart in search of regular playing time. However, Boey is yet to receive a proposal from any Premier League club despite reported interest from Crystal Palace.

Boey has featured in just nine Bundesliga appearances this season without recording a goal or assist. His last competitive outing for Bayern came on November 1 in a brief 15-minute cameo. Since then, the Frenchman has been either relegated to the bench or ruled out through illness, signalling his diminishing role in Vincent Kompany’s plans.

Bayern are reportedly demanding up to €20 million for the defender, who arrived at the Allianz Arena from Galatasaray in January 2024 for approximately €30 million. The Bavarian giants will likely have to accept a significant loss on their initial investment, with a fee in the region of €10-15 million considered more realistic.

The right-back’s struggles at Bayern contrast sharply with his success in Turkey, where he was instrumental in Galatasaray’s 2022-23 Süper Lig title triumph. During his two-and-a-half-year stint in Istanbul, Boey made 83 appearances across all competitions, contributing four goals and four assists while establishing himself as a key figure for the Turkish champions.

Born in Montreuil, France, Sacha Boey came through the academy at Rennes before joining Galatasaray in 2021. He represented France at youth level up to the U20s but has yet to earn a senior cap for Les Bleus. His move to Bayern was seen as a major step forward in his career, but injuries in his first season and limited opportunities this term have prevented him from making a lasting impact.

What Else?

Boey’s potential departure could have wider implications for Bayern’s transfer strategy. The Frenchman is considered internally as a sales candidate, with the club willing to discuss offers in the region of around €20 million, according to reports. A winter exit for Boey would significantly speed up planning on the right side of defence and could lead to Bayern accelerating their pursuit of Feyenoord right-back Givairo Read earlier than originally planned.

The club are open to discussions, but any move will depend on finding a suitable offer that matches both Bayern’s valuation and Boey’s ambitions for regular first-team football. Crystal Palace have expressed interest in the versatile defender as they seek to strengthen their right-back position, though negotiations have not progressed at this stage.
