Bayern Munich are working to secure a Dayot Upamecano contract extension as crucial days lie ahead for the Bundesliga champions.
The French defender’s current deal expires in summer 2026. Bayern officials remain confident the 27-year-old will commit his future to the Allianz Arena. Sporting director Max Eberl, technical director Christoph Freund and chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen are leading negotiations with Upamecano’s representatives.
A release clause appears likely in the new deal. Reports suggest Bayern will include an exit option to accommodate the defender’s ambitions. The clause would allow him to leave after fulfilling certain conditions.
Upamecano joined Bayern from RB Leipzig in July 2021 for €42.5 million. The Évreux-born centre-back has made 173 appearances across all competitions. He has scored six goals while helping Bayern secure three Bundesliga titles.
This season, Upamecano has established himself as a cornerstone of Vincent Kompany’s defence. He has feature in 21 games for Bayern this campaign. His partnership with Kim Min-jae has formed the backbone of a side that leads the table by eight points.
The defender has contributed two league goals already this campaign. This equals his previous best with 12 matches remaining. His mistake quota has dropped significantly. He has yet to concede a penalty this season after giving away nine across the previous eight campaigns.
Freund praised Upamecano’s progress in recent months. “Dayot is on a really good path,” the technical director stated. “He has become a leader. He plays strongly and consistently at a high level.”
Bayern’s captain Manuel Neuer wants the Frenchman to stay. “He’s a key player for us,” Neuer said. The 39-year-old goalkeeper highlighted Upamecano’s importance to the squad’s structure in a recent interview.
Interest from elsewhere complicates matters. Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain monitor the situation closely. Both clubs have indicated willingness to meet his salary demands if Bayern fail to agree terms. PSG view Upamecano as a potential cornerstone for their defence.
