Quinten Timber Marseille Transfer Confirmed as OM Sign Netherlands Midfielder in Cut-Price Deal

Olympique de Marseille have officially confirmed the Quinten Timber Marseille transfer, announcing the signing of the Netherlands international midfielder from Feyenoord Rotterdam in a cut-price deal.

The 24-year-old joins for around €4.5 million plus difficult-to-achieve bonuses after arriving in Marseille on Wednesday to complete the formalities. With his contract set to expire in June, Feyenoord moved quickly to avoid losing him for free.

The Quinten Timber Marseille transfer represents remarkable value for manager Roberto De Zerbi. Feyenoord around €8 million to Utrecht in July 2022 for the midfielder, making him the most expensive outgoing player in Utrecht’s history at the time.

Timber has made 15 appearances this season with 13 starts in the Eredivisie this campaign, scoring two goals and providing four assists. He has eight caps for the Netherlands national team, scoring one goal in World Cup qualifying against Lithuania.

The midfielder fell out with Feyenoord coach Robin van Persie and was stripped of the captain’s armband. After Sunday’s 3-4 home loss to Sparta Rotterdam, Van Persie criticized his training commitment, underlining the rupture. Van Persie stated a swift transfer would resolve his future.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who previously worked with Timber at Feyenoord, praised the signing ahead of their Champions League clash.

“He played under me at Feyenoord, and above all, he’s a great person. Marseille are signing a very good player, and he fits Roberto De Zerbi’s style.”

The Quinten Timber Marseille move sees him reunite with former Feyenoord teammate Igor Paixao, who joined last summer for over €30 million. Timber is a versatile central midfielder noted for his athleticism, ball-carrying ability and defensive awareness.

What Else?

Borussia Dortmund showed interest as early as November but Marseille won the race for his signature. The twin brother of Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber will look to establish himself in Ligue 1 with the 2026 World Cup approaching this summer.

At Feyenoord, Timber helped win the Eredivisie, KNVB Cup and Johan Cruyff Shield after being appointed captain in September 2024. His departure marks the end of a successful spell in Rotterdam that was ultimately soured by the breakdown in his relationship with Van Persie.
